The short version
- Parked for good? Look at home internet options first.
- On wheels and moving? Treat it like an RV: Starlink, cellular or both.
- Getting Wi-Fi to every corner is usually a router placement or mesh problem.
A tiny home sits somewhere between an RV and a house. Some move every season, and some never move again after the trailer gets parked. The right internet setup depends mostly on one question: does it move?
1. Does it stay put or move?
| Your tiny home | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Parked for good, rural land | Starlink Residential or a fixed cellular "home internet" plan | Fixed-address plans are usually built for one location and steady use. |
| Parked for good, near town | Wired service if it reaches you; otherwise cellular home internet | Cable or fiber beats everything else if the line is close. |
| Moves a few times a year | Starlink Roam or a mobile hotspot plan | Mobile plans are made to follow you. |
| Off-grid on solar | Starlink Mini or cellular | Both draw far less power than the bigger dishes. |
Starlink's current plans and service areas are listed at https://www.starlink.com. Check which plan types are allowed at a fixed address versus on the move, because the rules differ.
2. Starlink on a tiny home
- Clear sky matters most. Use the Starlink app's obstruction check before you pick a spot. Trees are the usual problem.
- Mount it once, properly. If the home doesn't move, a fixed mount on the roof, a gable end or a post in the yard is worth doing. See our mounting guide for the options.
- Power: on solar, the Mini's 25–40 W average draw (Starlink spec sheet: https://starlink.com/public-files/specification_sheet_mini.pdf ) is far easier to carry than a Standard dish. Watts × hours ÷ 12 = amp-hours from a 12 V battery. Our Starlink Mini guide walks through the math.
3. Cellular in a tiny home
- Many carriers sell fixed home-internet plans over their cell network. They're tied to an address, so check coverage for that exact spot.
- If the home moves, a mobile hotspot or cellular router on a hotspot or data plan is the flexible option. See our cellular plans and hotspots guide.
- Metal roofs and siding can block cell signal indoors. Putting the hotspot near a window often helps more than people expect.
- If you have 1–2 bars outside and none inside, a cell booster with an outside antenna can help. It can't create signal where there is none. Boosters must be registered with your carrier (FCC: https://www.fcc.gov/wireless/bureau-divisions/mobility-division/signal-boosters/consumer-signal-boosters ). weBoost Destination RV (parked-only booster) (paid link)
4. Wi-Fi to every corner (yes, even the loft)
- Tiny homes are small, but lofts, metal and appliances still make dead spots. Put the router high and central, not in a cabinet.
- A travel router lets you switch between Starlink, a phone and a hotspot, and gives you one Wi-Fi name for all your devices. GL.iNet Beryl AX travel router (paid link)
- Working outside on the porch? A second access point or a mesh unit near the door usually beats turning the main router up.
5. Decision in 30 seconds
- Wired service reaches you? Use it.
- Good cell coverage at the spot? Try fixed or mobile cellular first. It's the simplest setup.
- No cell coverage, or trees aren't a problem and you want speed? Go with Starlink.
- Working from home every day? Have two sources, with a router that can switch between them.
